Supported by a joint government investment

The Commonwealth and South Australian Governments have jointly committed funding to support a transformation of the operations into a commercially viable, low-emissions, 'pit to port' iron and steel facility underpinning long-term jobs and economic resilience for Whyalla and the Upper Spencer Gulf.

The assistance package includes:

  • supporting the administration process
  • immediate, on-the-ground help for impacted workers and businesses
  • $1.9 billion investment in the future of the Steelworks.

Government support for Whyalla recognises the important role it currently plays in the South Australian and national economies, its contribution to sovereign steelmaking capability, and its significant future potential.

Investing in the future of steelmaking

The Australian and South Australian Governments have committed $1.9 billion to invest in partnership with a new owner to transform the Steelworks and secure its long term future.

The sale process for the Whyalla Steelworks and associated mining operations has formally opened and bidders have put forward proposals for the transformation of the Steelworks, with a focus on modern steelmaking and the investment required to deliver a commercially sustainable operation.

The Government's $1.9 billion investment will support the transition beyond the ageing blast furnace towards modern steelmaking technology and maintaining Whyalla’s critical role in producing Australian steel and supporting national sovereign capability.

The Whyalla Steelworks Industrial Transformation Unit has been established to lead the South Australian Government’s coordinated response to the Whyalla Steelworks administration, and to support the broader industrial and economic transformation of Whyalla.
