Pathway to green iron and steel production

The pathway to green iron involves progressively cleaner methods of reducing iron ore to iron. Blast furnace steelmaking, using coal to reduce the iron ore into molten iron, is a significant contributor to global greenhouse gas emissions.

How the transition is possible

Transitioning to natural gas in direct reduced iron (DRI) processes lowers emissions as gas emits significantly less CO₂ than coal. DRI processes can also use a blend of natural gas and renewable hydrogen, reducing carbon emissions even further as hydrogen becomes available.

The Whyalla Steelworks transformation aims to position the facility to transition to lower emissions ironmaking, along with the adoption of an electric-arc furnace to support steelmaking.

Whyalla is open for investment

The Whyalla Steelworks transformation is an opportunity to lead Australia's next industrial chapter.

Key investment highlights:

  • Integrated pit-to-port opportunity: From local iron ore reserves to port-side processing and export capacity
  • Renewable energy potential: Whyalla has strong potential for renewable energy development, with abundant solar and wind resources, along with the electrical infrastructure needed to support industrial transformation.
  • Skilled workforce: A legacy of industrial capability, with strong community support.

Strategically positioning itself in steelmaking, mining, port logistics, and industrial innovation, Whyalla is establishing itself for a major industrial investment and transformation.
